Four Lanterns Winery on Paso’s 46 West

November 2, 2023 by calicoastblog

This winery is part of the Paso Robles Westside Bubbles Trail.

From Paso Robles, heading along the Highway 46 West corridor, you’ll pass a bunch of great wineries. One of these is Four Lanterns, a friendly, family-owned winery with a beautiful lawn and charming old barn. Steve and Jackie Gleason have been farming grapes, making wine (and Bubbles) and welcoming wine lovers, children and dogs here since 2013.

Named after their four beloved daughters (the lights of their lives), each wine also has some kind of light in the name. They grow Rhône (like Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Picpoul Blanc, etc.) and Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Semillon, etc.) varieties and produce some unique wines like a single-varietal Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Picpoul Blanc, and Semillon.

Four Lanterns hosts local live musicians on the lawn most Saturdays in Spring-Fall, and also throw a really great Sunday Night Concert series every summer, with wine specials and food trucks.

“Four Lanterns resides on 35 acres on the west side of Paso Robles in the formidable Willow Creek District. This area, renowned for hot days, cool nights and soil riddled with calcareous stone, provides a perfect environment for making exceptional wines. Jackie’s Vineyard, located in the Templeton Gap District, is the location where their Bordeaux varieties grow.”

But of course, my favorite wine is the Jacqueline Sparkling Wine of Viognier! It’s made using the traditional méthode champenoise style with an additional 2 years aging on the lees. It also has zero dosage, which is the driest style of sparkling wine (also called Brut Nature or Sauvage).

These Bubbles have aromas and flavors of green apple, lemon, lime, and lychee, and a fresh, crisp mouthfeel. Pair it with chocolate-covered strawberries (as with any Bubbles), lobster, and brunch with friends. It pretty much goes with anything!
